Setting up Line Cards (NIMs)
BE4000 allows you to connect to traditional telephony services and devices by adding Network Interface Modules (NIM). You can add a maximum of two NIM cards. For the list of supported NIM cards, refer Supported Line Cards.
Step 1: Turn on the slider for the NIM card slot where you want to insert the NIM card.
Step 2: Select the NIM card as per your connectivity requirements.
Note: Only one BRI/PRI port is supported, please use the first port on the line card (0/0).
NIM-2FXS or NIM-4FXS
Step 1: Choose one of the following:
- Disabled—The line is inactive.
- Analog Phone—The line is connected to an analog phone.
- Paging—The line is connected to an external paging system.
- Automatic Ringdown—The line is connected to a phone that has a dedicated connection with another phone. When the phone connected to this line goes off hook, the destination phone rings. There is no need to dial any number.
Step 2: Enter a label to identify each phone line in the “Line” field. Only 0-9 a-z A-Z ! # % , – . / = _ ? are allowed.
Step 3: Enter the extension number for the FXS phone line in the “Extension” field.
Step 4: Choose a class of restrictions (COR) from “Restrictions” drop-down list. COR decides the type of calls that can be placed from the FXS phone line. The available options are:
- Internal
- Local
- Local-Plus
- National
- National-Plus
- International
Step 5: Choose a type of algorithm from the “Law” field.
- U-law
- A-law
NIM-2FXO or NIM-4FXO
Step 1: Choose one of the following:
- Disabled—The line is inactive.
- Trunk—The line is connected to the Public Switched Telephone Network.
- Paging—The line is connected to an external paging system.
Step 2: Enter a name for each analog line in the “Line” field. Only 0-9 a-z A-Z ! # % , – . / = _ ? are allowed.
Step 3: Enter the number for each analog line in the “Number” field.
Step 4: Choose the line to be uni-directional or bi-directional from the “Direction” drop-down list.
- Uni-directional allows the phone line to receive the calls.
- Bi-directional allows the phone line to receive and make calls
Step 5: Choose a type of algorithm from the “Law” field.
- U-law
- A-law

- Bi-directional allows the phone line to receive and make calls
Step 8: Choose a type of algorithm from the “Law” field.
- U-law
- A-law
NIM-2BRI-NT/TE or NIM-4BRI-NT/TE
Step 1: Choose one of the following:
- Disabled—The line is inactive.
- Trunk—The line is connected to the Public Switched Telephone Network.
Step 2: Choose a service name from the “Service Name” drop-down list. The drop-down contains the list of service providers that you added in the DID page. You cannot choose the same service provider for SIP and Line Cards.
Step 3: Choose whether you want your call setup to work based on overlap receiving from the “Overlap Receiving” drop-down list. You can enable or disable. If your service provider does not use “enbloc” signaling, this option allows BE4000 to wait for additional digits to be received before the call is routed.
Optional
- If your service provider requires that your line use a static Terminal Endpoint Identifier, enter the value between 0 and 63 in the “Static TEI” field. If the field is left blank, the line attempt to negotiate a TEI.
- Check the “Send Redirecting IE Number” check box to include the Redirecting Number Information Element in the outbound Setup messages. Leave unchecked if you are not sure about your service provider supporting this feature.
- Enter the ISDN SPID in the “ISDN SPID” field. Some service providers use service profile identifiers (SPIDs) to define the services subscribed to by the ISDN device that is accessing the ISDN service provider. A SPID is usually a seven-digit phone number with some optional numbers.
- Choose a method for TEI negotiation based on your service provider requirements from the “TEI-Negotiation Method”. Setting a static TEI overrides TEI negotiation.
- The default behavior is TEI to be negotiated on power up. The following options are provided to preserve or remove a negotiated TEI when the interface is reset:
- Power Up and Remove
